After nearly all of CA’s Democratic Congressional Delegation gets behind Padilla, All statewide officials endorse Padilla for Senate

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today Senator Alex Padilla announced that all of California’s statewide elected officials have endorsed his campaign for the U.S. Senate. The announcement comes on the heels of endorsements from all but two of the California Democratic Congressional Delegation and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

The endorsements include: U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein, Governor Gavin Newsom, Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Secretary of State Shirley Weber, Attorney General Rob Bonta, State Controller Betty Yee, State Treasurer Fiona Ma, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.

Senator Padilla has made fighting the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic among his top priorities, which includes working to pass the American Rescue Plan that provided over $40 billion in state and local funding. In addition, Padilla successfully advocated for the mass vaccination sites in Los Angeles and Oakland to remain operational.

Full list of endorsements can be viewed here.

“When I appointed Alex Padilla to the U.S. Senate, I knew he represented the best of what California has to offer the country,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “Senator Padilla embodies the California Dream. When he graduated from MIT, Alex came back home and organized against Proposition 187, a preamble to what we’ve seen from Donald Trump’s Republican Party. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to make California as inclusive as possible. He did so in the State Legislature and again as California’s chief elections officer, and now he’s doing it as a U.S. Senator. I proudly support him in his 2022 campaign to return to the Senate.”

“I am proud to announce my support for my friend Senator Alex Padilla,” said Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis. “Senator Padilla’s historic appointment as California’s first Latino U.S. senator brought a much-needed fresh voice to the Senate. From taking on the filibuster to pushing for the expansion of voting rights, Senator Padilla has rolled up his sleeves to fight for the issues that matter. Senator Padilla has my full support as he seeks to continue representing our great state in Washington DC.”

“Today, I am announcing my support for Senator Padilla’s campaign to continue his service in the U.S. Senate,” said Secretary of State Shirley Weber. “As a former Secretary of State, Senator Padilla knows the importance of protecting voting rights and making California an inclusive home for all. His vocal support of the For the People Act is critical as we all work to make it easier for Americans to vote, reduce the influence of dark money in politics, and limit gerrymandering as a tool for voter suppression. I know Senator Padilla will continue to use his power to advocate for marginalized communities and Californians are lucky to have him in the U.S. Senate.”

Sen. Padilla was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to fill the Senate seat vacated by Vice President Kamala Harris for the remainder of her team. He is up for reelection in 2022.
