RELEASE: Mayor Garcetti Endorses Sen. Padilla for Senate

Senator Padilla has secured endorsements from all of California’s Democratic big city mayors

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced his endorsement of Alex Padilla’s campaign for the United States Senate in 2022. Mayor Garcetti joins a long list of big city mayors supporting Senator Padilla’s re-election, including San Francisco Mayor London Breed, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, Santa Ana Mayor Vicente Sarmiento and Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo

In April, Senator Padilla launched his 2022 election campaign with a broad range of endorsements including nearly all of the California Congressional Delegation, all statewide officials, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Senator Padilla has made fighting the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic among his top priorities, which includes working to pass the American Rescue Plan that provided over $40 billion in state and local funding. In addition, Padilla successfully advocated for the mass vaccination sites in Los Angeles and Oakland to remain operational.

“From the start of his career serving on the Los Angeles City Council to his successful tenure as California’s Secretary of State, Alex Padilla has been an exemplary public servant and champion for California’s working class and immigrant communities,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Though he has only served in the Senate for a few months, Senator Padilla has already earned a reputation as a compelling advocate for voting rights, climate change action, and immigration reform. His vocal advocacy for the American Rescue Plan helped bring $1.3 billion in federal aid to Los Angeles, providing businesses and families with critical economic relief. I’m proud to support his 2022 campaign and I have no doubt he will continue to make Angelenos proud through his continued service.”

“Mayor Garcetti has been an excellent partner and I’m honored to have his support,” said Sen. Padilla. “Mayor Garcetti and big city mayors have been instrumental partners in the fight against the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Their work is critical to our recovery. I look forward to our continued partnership and work to secure opportunity and equality for all Californians.”

Sen. Padilla was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to fill the Senate seat vacated by Vice President Kamala Harris for the remainder of her term. He is up for reelection in 2022.
