RELEASE: LCV Action Fund Endorses Sen. Padilla for Senate

LCV joins Equality California and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in endorsing Senator Padilla

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and California League of Conservation Voters announced their endorsement of Senator Alex Padilla’s campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2022. Senator Padilla has quickly racked up endorsements since announcing his campaign in mid-April, including nearly all of the California Congressional Delegation, all statewide officials, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Equality California, and all of California’s Democratic big city mayors.

A member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, Senator Padilla led colleagues in supporting grant programs to restore endangered species, introduced bills to expand California’s protected lands and national parks, and introduced the Clean Commute for Kids Act to transition school bus fleets across the nation to zero-emissions vehicles—protecting children’s health and the environment. Senator Padilla also participated in the reintroduction of the Green New Deal alongside Senator Edward J. Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

“Senator Alex Padilla has a long history of fighting for environmental justice and access to the ballot and in the Senate he has hit the ground running to address these critical issues, including calling on the Department of Justice to hold polluters accountable and introducing comprehensive legislation to expand and protect California’s wilderness,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We need bold leadership in the Senate and are proud to work with Senator Padilla to advance transformational progress towards addressing environmental justice, building clean energy infrastructure, and creating good paying jobs.”

““In a short amount of time, Senator Alex Padilla has already proven himself to be the bold, climate champion that California needs to meet this moment,” said CLCV Political and Organizing Director Mike Young. “From his time in the Los Angeles City Council, then the State Legislature, and then as California’s Secretary of State, Senator Padilla has always been committed to climate action and protecting our democracy, and we couldn’t be more excited to have his continued leadership now in Congress. With only nine years left to avert the catastrophic impacts of the climate crisis, Senator Padilla’s leadership in the Senate will move the needle towards building resilient communities, protecting public lands and resources, and ensuring a climate-just future for all Californians, and we are proud to endorse him.“

“Climate change is the defining issue of our time, and I’m committed to fighting in the Senate to tackle this looming crisis head-on,” said Senator Padilla. “In California, we are already seeing the devastating effects of climate change, including prolonged drought, wildfires, and extreme heat. We must act quickly and decisively to preserve our planet for our children and grandchildren. I’m proud to have the support of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and California League of Conservation Voters  as we continue the fight to protect our beautiful lands and all who call them home.”

Sen. Padilla was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to fill the Senate seat vacated by Vice President Kamala Harris for the remainder of her team. He is up for reelection in 2022.
