RELEASE: CA Federation of Teachers Endorses Padilla for Senate

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today the California Federation of Teachers (CFT) endorsed Alex Padilla’s campaign for the United States Senate in 2022. CFT’s announcement marks the Senator’s second major labor endorsement after National Nurses United’s endorsement last week.

In April, Senator Padilla launched his 2022 election campaign with a broad range of endorsements including nearly all of the California Congressional Delegation, all statewide officials, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Senator Elizabeth Warren. He has since been endorsed by Equality California, the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, and California’s Democratic big city mayors.

Full list of endorsements can be viewed here.

“CFT wholeheartedly endorses Senator Padilla’s continued service in the U.S. Senate because we know Senator Padilla will fight to secure the federal resources our students and teachers need, protect and promote labor rights nationally, and put forth innovative policy ideas like electric school buses to make our school communities healthier,” said CFT President Jeff Freitas. “We are proud to have Senator Padilla as California’s voice in Washington and we look forward to his future success.”

“I would not be where I am today without the wonderful teachers who encouraged me to pursue my dreams and gave me the tools to achieve them,” Senator Padilla said. “This past year, California’s teachers worked tirelessly to meet the needs of their students in the face of immeasurable challenges. There is always more we can do for our nation’s teachers and I’m committed to working hard every day on their behalf the way they work hard every day for our students. I’m proud to have the support of the California Federation of Teachers.”

Sen. Padilla was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to fill the Senate seat vacated by Vice President Kamala Harris for the remainder of her term. He is up for reelection in 2022.

Remember to vote for Alex Padilla TWICE on your ballot: for the Special Election to fulfill the partial Senate term ending January 2023 and for the Regular Election for a new six-year term in the Senate.

Why is Alex Padilla on the ballot twice?

When Kamala Harris became Vice President, Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Alex to fill her vacant Senate seat. Alex is running to finish Vice President Harris’ term (November 9, 2022-January 2, 2023), and in a separate election for a new full term beginning on January 3, 2023.

Make sure you vote for Alex Padilla in both elections so he can remain in the Senate to continue fighting to defend democracy.
