Statement

Governor Newsom,

I am honored and humbled by the trust you have placed in me.

On behalf of my family – my beautiful wife Angela, my three boys who are everything to me --

I intend to work each and every day to honor that trust and deliver for all 40 million Californians.

Whether you voted for Biden or Trump...  whether you live in the North State or the Southland...  whether you grew up speaking English, Spanish, Korean or Cantonese...  we are all Californians.  And I intend to be a Senator for all the people.

[Tengo la intención de ser senador para todos los californianos!]

My parents, Ernesto and Lupe Padilla, came to California in 1968 in search of a better life.  They met in Los Angeles, both recently arrived from Mexico.  It was love at first sight and they got married and applied for green cards in that order.

My father never had a chance to finish elementary school.  For forty years, he worked as a short-order cook.  He likes to brag that his kitchen never failed an inspection.  For those same forty years, my mom worked tirelessly as a housekeeper.  It seemed like she never had a day off.

I grew up in a three-bedroom house in Pacoima in the Northeast San Fernando Valley… a community affected by more than its share of problems… from poverty to crime to environmental racism.  It wasn’t the safest neighborhood, but we had a backyard.

It was there my parents taught us about the value of education.

They taught us that no matter who you are or where you live you can be anything.  In fact, you can even change your community if you are willing to work hard enough.

That’s the California Dream I was raised to believe in.

I think about my parents and I think about all the people in our state who are hurting right now.

The restaurant workers and domestic workers out of a job wondering how they’re going to pay the bills at the end of the month.

Of course, I think about all those who’ve lost loved ones in this pandemic.

I think about all those Californians who don’t have the luxury of zooming to work.

I think about all those families relying on food pantries to feed their kids.

I think about those small business owners just barely hanging on wondering how they’re going to make another payroll.

I think about all those young people dropping off with distance learning.

I think about all those people on the front lines who are stepping up for their fellow Californians from our health care workers to our teachers.

I’m going to the United States Senate to fight for you.

I’m going to the Senate to protect healthcare and to make sure every Californian has access to a vaccine.

I’m going to the Senate to get our economy back on track and our people back to work.

I’m going to the Senate so we can finally make real progress on our long-challenges… from climate change to immigration reform to common-sense gun safety.

Fellow Californians, I know we are going to beat this pandemic and get through this crisis.

I know we are going to lead a California comeback that doesn’t leave working families behind.

We are going to do it the same way we always have.

The same way my parents did.

By getting to work.

Let’s get to work.

Thank you and God Bless you all.
