Labor and the Right to Organize
Growing up, my father was a cook in a union restaurant. I witnessed firsthand what a difference a union makes for workers seeking fair wages, safe working conditions, and the dignity to provide for their family. Today, he’s a proud retiree of Unite HERE Local 11.
I believe that the right to organize is fundamental the proper functioning of our democracy. The labor movement has protected countless workers and working families from mistreatment, discrimination, wage gauging, and unsafe working conditions.
Labor unions are an essential part of the economy of this state and our country.
That’s why in each elected office that I have held, I’ve always sought to partner with labor unions. In this race, I am proud to be endorsed by unions like SEIU California, the California Professional Firefighters, California Nurses Association (CNA), UNITE HERE! California State Council, and the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), among others.
I have also been outspoken on the need for more workplace protections. For example, after two stabbings in a local hospital, I worked with the California Nurses Association and authored a bill to require hospitals to create comprehensive workplace safety plans and to report all violent incidents.
I look forward to continuing to partner with labor leaders as we fight to keep the American Dream alive in California, and pledge to continue standing with working families.
