Climate Change and the Environment
As a graduate from MIT, I believe in science. Climate change is real, and we need to prioritize efforts to protect our environment and our wildlife.
In all my years of public service, I have prioritized efforts to protect our environment:
- As a member of the Los Angeles City Council, I shepherded the construction of a city library built to Platinum LEED standards. And I supported the creation of a first of its kind Environmental Justice Zone, requiring city officials to consider existing and cumulative environmental and health conditions when considering new developments.
- As President of the Los Angeles City Council, I established the Ad Hoc Committee on the Los Angeles River with the goal of identifying ways to restore, enhance, and create more green space in and around the Los Angeles River. I helped negotiate and pass a $500 million bond measure to clean up polluted stormwater that would otherwise flow into the Pacific Ocean.
- As State Senator, I authored the first in the nation state phase out of single-use plastic bags. As Chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, Utilities, and Communications, I shepherded increased renewable energy standards for the state and authored bills to better conserve water and improve air quality across the state.
I am proud to be endorsed by Sierra Club California and the California League of Conservation Voters.
